[HowTo] Make Spymac mail work again.

Beginning February, Spymac decided to withdraw support for Pop3 for free users. It came as a blow for unsuspecting users like me as I was using Spymac as my default email for more than two years. And they were giving a good service indeed. I checked all their support forums and found that so many users have decided to quit Spymac against this move.

Anyways .. To come to the point, there is still a way to make Pop3 working with Spymac again. This is an old trick, but very handy. Fortunately, Spymac have provided Mail Forward feature to all free users. So, you can forward all your Spymac mails to an account which does have Pop3 feature. The best service for this purpose, I believe, is Gmail all because with Gmail you can send emails as different “From: ” addresses. So the idea is to enable Pop3 on your Gmail account, Forward all your Spymac emails to your Gmail account. And with Gmail, you can send emails with your Spymac Address as “From :” field. So, to make it all work, do this :

First login to your Gmail account (If you don’t have a Gmail account, you may post a request here).
      –>Now click on Settings.
      –>Click on Accounts.
–>Click on Add another email address.
–>In the Name field, put Spymac, and in Email Address field, type your Spymac mail address.
      –>Click on Next Step.
–> In the next screen, click on Send Verification.

Now login to your Spymac webmail. You should’ve got a confirmation email from Gmail. Complete the verification by clicking on the link provided in the mail. Now you can send messages from Gmail as your Spymac address. Now to enable Pop forwarding in Spymac:
–>Click on Preferences > Account Preferences in Spymac’s webmail interface.
      –>Click on Mail Settings tab.
–>Type in your Gmail address in the Forward To Address field.
      –> Click on Save Settings.

With this, all your mails to your Spymac account will be forwarded to your Gmail address to which you can have Pop3 access. To configure Pop3 access to your Gmail account, check this. And to send emails from your Spymac account, you will need to use Gmail’s web interface (I tried all settings to make it work with email clients but it doesn’t work ). To send from a Spymac address, just click on Compose and select your Spymac address in From: address field. You should also tweak some settings in Gmail for better usage:
      –> Click on Settings.
      –> Click on Accounts.
–> Under the When I receive a message sent to one of my addresses: field, select the option that says Reply from the same address the message was sent to.

All this pain is necessary if you were using Spymac as your default email address and / or have more than one Spymac addresses (Just like I have ) .. So forward your emails from all your accounts to a Gmail address and use the Pop3 feature of Gmail to check your mails. However to send emails, you’d still need to login to web interface of Gmail (or you can login directly to Spymac too, but as I am writing this, webmail of Spymac is down and is doing this like for a week now). I hope Gmail will release some feature for users so that they can send mails from their email clients using different From addresses.

  1. Thanks for the pointers.

I will note that after I set my spymac account up to forward to my gmail account I sent through a test message. It was successfully forwarded, but now spymac’s web based email client tells me that I have 0 messages in my inbox. Words cannot express how I feel about that. So the moral of the story is caveat emptor. Although spymac gives you the option to forward your emails, availing yourself of the option they provide may be a stunningly bad idea.

I did get some benefit from your post though, in that now I have Apple Mail hooked up to Gmail. 😀 For me the Apple Mail client was what I liked most about spymac anyway (oh yeah, and the huge mail limit helped… when it was accessible… but the less said about that…) That whole desktop integration thing was the deal closer for me, and I was disappointed when gmail came out that they didn’t provide the Pop/Pop3 service (not sure if Pop and Pop 3 are the same thing or different…. maybe pop3 is just like pop… only poppier?) (now with three times the pop!?).

  2. Umm.. But thats what happens when you download emails with your email clients too .. But still .. They should’ve given an option to keep a copy of the email in Spymac inbox too ..

  3. Hello Shahab,

    This is very interesting information.
I am already forwarding my spymac-mail to another e-mailadress, but I’m searching for a big(ger) account and google mail will do very good.
Could you send me also an invitation?

    Thanks.

  4. It’s a shame spymac quit the pop3 services now we will have to move to another free one.
By the way do u have any Gmail invite?? pleeeaaase 🙂 jeje

    Thanks a lot

  5. hi.. can you help me? i can not access my spymac email. Do you know how can i do that? i can’t access even if thy spymac page.. (www.spymac.com)I don’t know what is happening.. Oh,i don’t speak english very weel, but i’ll try… Please, help me if you can. Thanks a lot.

  6. Hmm… Thiara, the webmail login of Spymac is here. Try logging it from there. Or maybe they are doing some maintenence work on their servers so your account is not available.

  7. Same thing here for two days now, and counting…
It seems to be a recurring “problem” at spymac for some months (years??) but this time it’s much worse :
Any page reffering to the spymac domain brings you to a page with a flash movie & after that there’s nothing you can do, except click on the link to go to the mail login page… (so no access to forums or anything else) And once on the mail login and providing username and password the server answers you are not a known user!?!?!

If i ever manage to login again i’ll move all my mails to my pc & never trust them again for anything important, this time it’s just too much. I could put up with occasional server downtimes now it seems to be the routine, if they can’t handle the bandwidth for free then let them say so instead of jeopardising their users mails.

  8. Die fucking Spymac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Die forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now wee have a better service with Gmail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW: I’ve lost 500 MB of e-mails at Spymac!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t access them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Hello,

Do you know any way I could forward all the content of my spymac folders to my new gmail mailbox ? (Auto-forward is activated but what about the ‘already received’ mails ?)
Is there any massive forward option ? I couldn’t find it but maybe you know some tricks ?

    Cheers
    e-gor

  10. Hi
Even I haven’t during the last weeks been able to access my spymac mail account. After enquiring I received following message from spymac support : “Please note, that all email accounts on free-accounts that had not been verified prior to changeover to Spymac V have been purged from the system and are no longer accessible. All accounts that were verified(via Paypal or SMS) will retain their email”
So all my e-mail is gone. Spymac is too unreliable for my taste.
Shahab, if you still have invitations to Gmail I would very much appreciate one.
    Thankyou
    Stefan

  11. Stefan I just sent you a Gmail invite. Sad to hear that your emails were deleted by Spymac.

Gmail is way better service and I hope you will love it. Enjoy .. !

  12. Now I see others have lost their spymac emails. I really do not appreciate spymac offering free email and then deleting users’ emails. I’ve lost close to a gig of emails. It’s one thing to start charging for email service, it’s VERY BAD to delete your customers’ emails.

  13. Yeah I agree… Now I have switched to Gmail and my ISP’s email services … Atleast they are reliable and are always up .. Unlike Spymac ..

  14. if anyone checks this… spymac has become some bargain basement scam site. but…i forgot to move specific important emails off first…
    do i have any recourse…?

  15. Yeah I signed up for accounts with this email that need to be deleted… how can I still access Spymac email!?
