How to write in Hindi without any IME

This text written in Devnagri (Hindi).. You will need Unicode support in your Operating system and browser to view it. So If all you get is boxes after this text, your system is Unicode non compliant.

Chatting in Hinglish has become a normal routine for Hindi speaking people.. And with advent of Unicode support in most operating systems and browsers, it has become easy to write in Hindi easily.. The recent versions of MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger support Unicode so now you can chat in Unicode with your friends easily ..

Earlier the only way to do this was either to install an IME on both ends and then communicate or write the text in a transcripter program such as Baraha and copy paste in your IM window .. Well … No more such troubles now .. Now you can directly write in your favorite program in Hindi .. and no fonts installation required .. (Well some installation is required though 😉 .. )

So, to use HindiWriter, you’ll need to install complex script support on your computer. On Windows XP, you can do so by going to Control Panel and opening Regional and Language options applet. On the Language tab, Enable the option of Install files for complex script and right to left languages. Click on Apply. You may need your XP Cd to complete the installation. Here is a screenshot :
Screenshot of XP Regional Options

For Windows 2000, Goto Control Panel and click on Regional Options. Click on General Tab. Enable ‘Indic’ Click on Apply. You may need your Windows 2000 cd for comleting the installation.

Now the tougher part is over. Just download HindiWriter and install it. Now to type in Hindi, just run the program and press Shift Pause. Hindi keyboard map will be activated and whatever you will type will be converted to Devnagri automatically. It’s a phonetic font so if you want to write श , you can do so by typing sh . So if you can type in Hinglish, you can type in Hindi too .. We are using it successfully with MS Word, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger too .. And you can write in Hindi on Unicode compliant browsers such as Maxthon, Firefox or Opera too …

  5. hi Shahab,

This is cool piece of software.

I got the software and downloaded, its working fine with my machine (win XP). Yahoo! and MSN are also able to display hindi characters properly.

But theres is some problem with the receiving end. Though the other machine is having 2000 installed, hindi fonts are not displaying. Can you guess/suggest what could be the problem is?

  6. Vijay, the receiving end must also be configured for Unicode. So if Unicode is not enabled there, & if it doesn’t have a unicode font, then it won’t display the hindi chars!!

  7. Amit: what is (minimum) procedure to be followed at the “receiver’s” PC so that the hindi characters can be displayed?

I think on Win XP no special thing is required, but on Win2K, we need to set-up “something”, now the question is “what is this something?”.

  8. what is (minimum) procedure to be followed at the “receiver’s” PC so that the hindi characters can be displayed?

the same procedure as mentioned above in Shahab’s post, except that he won’t have to install this HindiWriter unless he also wants to write in Hindi.

    तरीका यह है कि आपको “स्वर” एवम उनके उच्चारण इत्यादि का ध्यान रखना होगा।
    अधिकतर शब्द जो बिना किसी मात्रा के पूर्ण होते हैं उनके अंत में “a” आयेगा।
    जैसे:
    अमर = amara या amar
    विजय = vijay

    आधे शब्दों के लिये “a” नही लगेगा।
    जैसे:

    शब्द = shabd ~=~ शबद = shabad
    पर = para / par ~=~ प्र = pra
    क्र = kra ~=~ कर = kara / kar

    कहीं कहीं “हलन्त” का प्रयोग भी करना पड सकता है:
    .H हलंत के लिये प्रयुक्त (prayukt) होगा:

    ट्र = T.hra
    राष्ट्र = rAShT.hra
    धान = dhaan / dhAn
    धयान = dhayaan / dhayAn
    ध्यान = dh.hyaan

    विशेष (visheSh) मात्राएं (matraae.n):

    कृष्णा = kRRiShNaa
    शर्त = sharta / shart
    क्रुर = krur
    क्षमा = kShamaa
    लक्ष्य = lakShya
    ॠषि = RRiShi

    उम्मीद है, अब आपको हिन्दी लिखने में कोई परेशानी नहीं होगी।

  10. thank u very much Amit 😀 does anyone here wish to talk over msn i do nto have many friends from india i was born in mauritius 😀

  14. Hey, I don’t have my XP cd with me now at the moment. So can someone type my name in himdi so i can use it on msn? The name is: Nitya. Thanks!

  15. Nitya, if you want, you can use Uninagari(use IE for this, supports Opera as well but not good) as well to write Hindi without installing any software, though I’d recommend using HindiWriter if you can!! 🙂

  16. Thank you for writing my name as well as giving me the link to the other site. I will check it out soon :).

  17. I am an Australian with an Indian friend who resides in Aus. He recently went to India to see his family and purchased my daughter and I some lovely gifts. His mother helped him choose, and I would love to say thank you to her also. I know my friend speaks English but I imagine his mother does not. Can anyone please show me how to write “thank you” in Hindi? I will enlarge the text and use it on the front of a card I will hand make.

  18. thanks so much Amit. i tried searching the web for a converter but couldn’t find one 🙂

How to write in Hindi without any IME.

ok its much easier to write this way. Anyways so for the other person to receive the messages in Hindi.. the person has to go to control panel. Click on the settin etc.. bt doesnt have to download the software.
    Ai thnx..

Windows XP, 2000, 2003 .. Linux ..

  25. I am very very impressed with this software and i really thankx to you for your this wonderful creation. Now it is very easy to write in hindi only by you.
I have a problem to write a word because i am going to print a CD of bhajan’s geet for free distributing to my known people’s.
    my word is=paarshavnaath

    that was tuff!!
Main bhi hindi mein blog karna chaahata hoon
